Ballybot, Armagh

Ballybot is an urban area which forms the western part of Newry, lying the west bank of the Clanrye River in County Armagh. It is within the townland of Ballinlare, in the civil parish of Newry. Ballybot developed around the junction of present day Kiln Street, Francis Street, Patrick Street and Dominic Street. The settlement probably developed following the construction of a wooden bridge across the river in 1642. The earliest depiction of a settlement here is on the 1703 Nevil Survey of Newry. The opening of the Newry Canal in the 1740s saw the marshy land between Ballybot and the canal drained and Ballybot developed as a quayside and industrial area. Ballybot House is a former linen mill, built in 1865. St Catherine's Church (RC) is a grand Gothic structure designed by George C. Ashlin and completed in 1875. The area is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
