Ballyarnet, Londonderry

Ballyarnet is a suburban village in County Londonderry. It is within the townland of Ballyarnet, in the civil parish of Templemore. The hamlet of Ballyarnet has lain within the south of Ballyarnet townland since at least the 18th century. The area south of the hamlet saw suburban development from the late 20th century, effectively creating a larger suburban village of Ballyarnet which stretches into Shantallow townland and is sometimes considered an outer northern suburb of Londonderry. Ballyarnet Racecourse, which hosted races between 1777 and 1927, was considered one of the best racecourses in Ireland at its peak. The McCorkell Family built the current Ballyarnet House, north-east of the hamlet, in the late 19th century, on the site of a 17th-century house. The village is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
