Balham, Surrey

Balham is a former village that is now a metropolitan district in Surrey, forming a south-western suburb of London. Balham has been settled since Saxon times and is listed in Domesday as 'Belgeham'. The village developed along the Roman road Stane Street, to the north of Tooting Bec. Until the 18th Century Balham was a small village accompanied by mansions and villas belonging to wealthy merchants. St Marys Church dates from 1808. The villas began to be overrun by suburban housebuilding following the arrival of the railway in 1856. The Bedford public house dates from the 1870s. Du Cane Court (1937) is a distinctive Art Deco apartment block. The area is within the council area of Wandsworth.
