Badminton House, Gloucestershire
Badminton House is a large country house and estate at Badminton, Gloucestershire. The house has ancient origins but was modernised by Sir Thomas Somerset in the 1620s. The Dukes of Beaufort acquired the property in the late 17th century and it remains the family seat. The third duke adapted Sir Thomas Somerset's house by incorporating several gabled ranges around the courtyard, adding a set of domestic apartments, and raising a grand Jonesian centrepiece on the north front. The fourth duke had architect William Kent renovate and extended the house in the Palladian style. The house is famous for its sporting connections, hosting the annual Badminton Horse Trials and giving its name to the sort of Badminton, supposedly invented by the children of the eighth duke in the Great Hall. It is within the council area of South Gloucestershire.
