Ayscoughfee Hall is a historic house in Spalding, Lincolnshire, in the Parts of Holland. The Hall was begun in 1429 for Sir Richard Aldwyn and a spacious brick mansion in the Tudor style. It is a rare surviving example of a mediæval brick building, with a multitude of additions and alterations and remodelling over time. Thus, the Hall displays a mix of architectural styles, reflecting the tastes of its various owners over time, including Medieval, Georgian, and Victorian influences. The formal and ornamental 5 acre gardens to the east and south, are mainly 18th century in origin, laid out in about 1730 by William Sands. The grounds include an eighteenth-century ice house, yew hedges dating back to the 1720s, an ornamental lake, and a war memorial designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The Hall was primarily a family home from 1451 to 1902, and the prominent Johnson family were the longest owners, resident from 1658 to 1864. Afterwards it was home for a succession of tenant families, before being purchased by the people of Spalding in the early 20th Century. Since then, it has housed Belgian WW1 refugees, been a library, a school and Council Offices. Today, it is the District's museum. In 2003 Ayscoughfee Hall closed for renovation and refurbishment, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, South Holland District Council, Lincolnshire Tourism and the Friends of Ayscoughfee. The Museum reopened in June 2006 and the Hall has recently started to develop events, including theatrical performances, craft fairs, etc. and is licensed for civil wedding ceremonies. It is within the council area of South Holland (Lincolnshire).
