Audenshaw, Lancashire

Audenshaw is a town in Lancashire. Audenshaw became a centre for textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Nico Ditch, a mediæval linear earthwork, runs through the area. Some of the original village of Audenshaw was demolished during the construction of the Audenshaw Reservoirs in 1877. For local government purposes, Audenshaw was the basis of an urban district from 1894 to 1974. Ryecroft Hall was donated to the people of Audenshaw by Austin Hopkinson in 1922. The town is within the council area of Tameside.
