Atherton, Lancashire
Atherton is a town in Lancashire. Atherton dates from the Anglo-Saxon age, built on and around seven brooks. The town has been associated with coal mining and nail manufacture since the 14th century. Manufacturing is still an important part of the town's economy, along with retail. Chowbent Chapel, a Unitarian meeting place, is the oldest place of worship in the town (1721). The town is within the council area of Wigan.
