Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire
Ashton-Under-Lyne is a market town in Lancashire. It stands on the north bank of the River Tame. It received a Royal Charter in 1414. By the mid-19th century Ashton had become an important mill town. Ashton town centre contains many Victorian buildings. Ashton Town Hall (1840) was designed by Charles Lee in the Neoclassical style. Portland Basin warehouse has been turned into a museum. The town is within the council area of Tameside.
