Armagh, Armagh
Armagh is a city in County Armagh, of which it is the county town. In 1830, most of Armagh's then urban townlands were amalgamated into the townland of Corporation. Since then the city has expanded such that parts now lie within the townlands of Aghamoat, Ballynahone More, Cargagh, Cavanacaw, Drumadd, Drumarg, Drumman More, Killuney, Legarhill, Lurgyvallen, Mullynure and Parkmore. All these townlands are in the civil parish of Armagh, with exceptions of Cavanacaw (civil parish of Lisnadill) and Mullynure (civil parish of Grane). As the city expanded, these townlands have lent their names to roads and housing estates. St Patrick's (CofI) Cathedral stands on Cathedral Hill, the highest point in Armagh. The site was possibly once a pagan sanctuary. According to tradition, St Patrick founded his main church here in AD 445. The church has been destroyed and rebuilt many time since. The city is within the council area of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.
