Ardoyne, Antrim
Ardoyne is a former village that is now an urban area in the north-west of Belfast, County Antrim. It is within the townland of Edenderry, in the civil parish of Shankill. The village was founded in 1815 when businessman Michael Andrews moved his Damask factory from Little York Street. In addition to the factory he built a large house for himself and thirty houses for employees. By 1850 there were three additional mills in the area. The area was not fully developed for housing until the mid 20th century. It is a working class and mainly Catholic and republican district. Ardoyne is within the council area of Belfast.
