Appuldurcombe House, Hampshire

Appuldurcombe House is a large 18th-century English Baroque country house , now mostly a shell, located near Godshill, Isle of Wight, Hampshire. Appuldurcombe began as a priory in 1100. It became a convent, then the Elizabethan home of the Leigh family. The present house was begun in 1702 by Sir Robert Worsley, 4th Baronet. The architect was John James. The house was greatly extended in the 1770s. The house fell into major disrepair after wartime bomb damage and is now mainly a shell. Its front section has been re-roofed and glazed, and a small part of the interior recreated. It is within the council area of Isle of Wight.
