Antrim, Antrim
Antrim is a town, lying on the Six Mile Water, on the north-east shore of Lough Neagh in County Antrim, of which it is the county town. It is within the townlands of Towns Parks, Balloo, Bleerick, New Park, Stiles, Park Hall, Steeple and Spring Farm, in the civil parish of Antrim. A monastery is believed to have been founded here in AD 495. The 10th-century Antrim Round Tower is the only survival from its burning in 1147. Anglo-Norman lord John de Courcy conquered the area in the late 12th century, building a Motte and bailey castle, now in Antrim Castle Gardens. Antrim Castle was raised by Sir Hugh Clotworthy during the Plantation era, as the area was colonized by English and Scottish settlers. Even at the end of the 19th century, the town remained little more than the high street, the castle and its grounds. The linen industry had been established along the river. There was lmited development in the first half of the 20th century, but substantial housing developments took place around the old town from the 1960s onwards.
The town is within the council area of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
