Anstey Castle, Hertfordshire

Anstey Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle adjacent to the Norman church of St George's in Anstey, Hertfordshire. It survives as a large flat-topped motte which measures 240ft north-south by 200ft east-west and is about 10ft in height. Surrounding the motte is a waterfilled ditch 35ft wide with a 15ft wide causeway to the south-east. The castle is attributed to Eustace, Count of Cologne, who held the manor at Domesday. It is within the council area of East Hertfordshire (Hertfordshire).
