Altnagelvin, Londonderry

Altnagelvin is a suburban area in the south-east of the Waterside area of Londonderry, County Londonderry. It is within the townland of Altnagelvin, in the civil parish of Clondermot. Altnagelvin townland was largely rural until the mid 20th century. The townland has been the site of the parish church since at least as far back as the 12th century. The current Glendermott Parish Church (C of I) is a Victorian Gothic structure, largely built in the 1860s by architects F.W. & G.W. Beckett. Close to the church was a small hamlet around the main crossroads in the south-east of the townland. Nearby stands Glendermott Presbyterian Church, dating back to 1696 and refurbished in 1938. This area became a popular site for villas and country houses during the 19th century. Altnagelvin Hospital opened in 1960 and the rest of the townland saw large-scale suburban development from shortly after that period. The area is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
