Allen Banks and Staward Gorge, Northumberland

Allen Banks and Staward Gorge is a Victorian pleasure garden in Northumberland. The river Allen runs through the dramatic wooded ravine of Saward Gorge, just east of Bardon Mill. The woods in the ravine are the largest area of ancient woodland in Northumberland. The landscape of Allen Banks was designed in the 19th century, over the course of 30 years by Susan Davidson as a wilderness garden. From the beginning, Davidson wanted to create a natural space that visitors could enjoy and Allen Banks has become an excellent home for flora, fauna and fungi. The actual history of Allen Banks goes back to the 16th century when the Ridley family of Willimoteswick Castle owned the estate. It is within the council area of Northumberland.
