Alfreton, Derbyshire

Alfreton is a historic market town in Derbyshire. Alfreton is said to have been founded by King Alfred. Originally a Saxon manor, it was listed as 'Elstretune' in Domesday. During the medieval period the economy was centred on agriculture, later becoming a centre for coal mining and iron-working. Since the 1960s, employment has shifted to factory, retail, and service enterprises. Alfreton civil parish was the basis of Alfreton urban district from 1896-1974 during which time the town saw major expansion. Alfreton Hall was built by Rowland Morewood in 1725. St Martin's Church dates back to the 13th century. The town is within the council area of Amber Valley (Derbyshire).
