Aldwych, Middlesex

Aldwych is a street and an urban area in Westminster, Middlesex, forming part of the West End of London. The street itself, a crescent connected to the Strand at both ends, was constructed in the early 20th century. The name refers to the Anglo-Saxon settlement of 'Lunenwic', west of the walls of 'Londenburth' (i.e. the Roman city). The Saxon town became known as 'Aldwych' ('old port') after the Alfred the Great re-built the London fortifications in the late 9th century. It lies in the West End's Theatreland. Aldwych is within the council area of Westminster.
