Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire

Aberdeen is a city and the county town of Aberdeenshire. It is a major centre of the North Sea oil industry. The city's nicknames include the Granite City, the Grey City and the Silver City with the Golden Sands. During the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries, Aberdeen's buildings incorporated locally quarried grey granite, whose mica deposits sparkle like silver. The city has a long, sandy coastline. Aberdeen is home to one of the four ancient universities of Scotland. Several of Aberdeen's suburbs (Tullos, Altens, Kincorth, Cove Bay) lie south of the River Dee in Kincardineshire. Aberdeen is within the council area of City of Aberdeen.
