Abbey Wood, Kent

Abbey Wood is a former hamlet that is now a suburban area between Plumstead and Belvedere in Kent. The hamlet lay partly in Plumstead parish and partly in Erith parish, to the north of the Abbey Woods (themselves named from the nearby Lesnes Abbey). Despite the opening of Abbey Wood railway station in 1849, the area remained rural until the 1950s, when the Abbey Wood housing estate was built. The area is within the council areas of Greenwich and Bexley.
