Abaty Nedd, Glamorgan
Abaty Nedd (English: Neath Abbey) is a ruined Cistercian monastery at Neath, Glamorgan. The abbey was established in 1129 when Richard I de Grenville, one of the Twelve Knights of Glamorgan, gave 8,000 acres of his estate to Savigniac monks from western Normandy. Following the merging of the Savigniac order into the Cistercian order in 1147, Neath Abbey became a Cistercian house. The abbey was ravaged by the Welsh uprisings of the 13th century. The abbey was dissolved in 1539. In the late 18th century, an iron foundry was opened near the abbey ruins. The ruined walls of both the Abbey and later mansion were gradually engulfed in industrial waste. The site was excavated between 1924 and 1935, 7,000 tons of slag and other industrial waste being removed by hand to uncover the abbey ruins. The remains of the abbey's gatehouse stand on New Road alongside Abbey Primary School. The monument is in the care of Cadw. It is within the council area of Neath Port Talbot.
